In its heyday, Thomasville was known as the “Winter Resort of the South”—a sporting playground for America’s wealthiest families such as the Carnegies, Vanderbilts and Phipps who were seeking refuge from the bitter cold up north. Hunting and equestrian pursuits were the name of the game and that tradition continues today with more hunting plantations than anywhere else in the United States.
Many of these grand homes, such as Pebble Hill Plantation, are open to the public, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of a bygone era. South Eden (formerly Melhana Plantation) has been lovingly converted into a five-star resort complete with a heated indoor pool, live entertainment and a historic replica of the original Show Boat Theatre in New York. This beautifully restored building was the location of the first-ever viewing of Gone With The Wind, funded in part by local investors.
Thomasville’s brick-paved streets are shaded by majestic oaks and boast award-winning eateries, charming boutiques and historic buildings. Main Street also features an alternate quail hunt with 18 bronze quails hidden high and low waiting to be discovered.
Named “The Rose City,” Thomasville has been hosting its annual Rose Festival for over 100 years, complete with a parade, flower shows and live music. Its annual Victorian Christmas celebration has become a popular draw featuring Victorian-era carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, a live nativity and appearances from St. Nicholas himself.
